A recent publication from the Irish Missionary Union has just been launched. It is the Directory of Faith Based Overseas Volunteering Programs click on the image to download Over the last number of years, many IMU members have been involved in setting up Volunteering programs, for people of all ages. It is true to say that IMU members Volunteer Missionary Movement and Viatores Christi have led the way in developing Lay Missionary programs in particular. In more recent times, there has been a growth in the variety of organisations involved in sending volunteers abroad; many groups are NGOs and other volunteers are sent by the Government itself. However, Faith based groups have remained at the centre of sending people overseas. It is estimated that 300 people annually, (not including secondary school short term assistance projects) are going abroad to serve overseas, following the Gospel call ‘to serve’ those most in need. The directory is a product of the IMU members’ involvement with faith based groups and overseas volunteering. It is also hoped that this directory will help new volunteers in the future to find a way of expressing their service to others overseas.
