Jesuit school helps students celebrate roots 7 Feb 2012 | 5:24 am St Xavier’s Collegiate school in Kolkata has set up a club to help students to immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of West Bengal. According to Father Sebastian James SJ, the school’s vice principal, one of its aims is to train them to be “agents of cultural traditions.”
“Most people think there is no scope for nurturing cultural traditions in Church-run English schools and we wanted to break this myth,” said Fr James, adding that “60 percent of the students now belong to the group.”

Confict ‘encourages rights abuses’ 7 Feb 2012 | 5:09 am Human rights violations in Kachin state will continue unless there is a negotiated ceasefire, said a member of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission yesterday.
“As the conflict in Kachin state continues … rights violations will exist. [They] may be the result of a lack of knowledge of human rights,” U Tun Aung Chaing, who is also a retired professor from Yangon Arts and Sciences University, said.
He added that rights violations have decreased in areas where ceasefires have been negotiated or where negotiations for peace have started.

‘Underground’ administrator dies 7 Feb 2012 | 4:40 am Father Lawrence Zhang Wenchang, apostolic administrator of the three ecclesiastical territories in southwestern Yunnan province – Kunming, Dali and Zhaotong – has died aged 92.
He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in October and died in his home town in Shilin Yi autonomous county on Sunday.
The Sani-ethnic priest’s body will be on view for seven days so people can pay their last respects according to tribal custom of Sani, a subgroup of Yi-ethnic.

Bishop calls for health act revision 7 Feb 2012 | 4:35 am A Catholic bishop yesterday called on the government to amend a reproductive health law that he said encourages women to have abortions.
Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong-hun of Cheongju, president of the Bioethics Committee of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea objected specifically to Article 14 of the Mother and Child Health Act, which was passed in 1973.
“Article 14 … should be abolished because the clause encourages women to have an abortion,” Bishop Chang said during a Mass at Myeongdong Cathedral.

Twitter difficult to block, says priest 7 Feb 2012 | 4:30 am A Catholic priest says the government is wasting its time if it thinks it can censor social networking sites like Twitter to stop people abusing others or committing online crime.
“Twitter is difficult to monitor because anonymous users can simply open another account in other names,” Father Antonius Benny Susetyo, who has 1,485 followers, said today.
